A lot of people want support, but they also wonder: Will I be judged? Will this be awkward? Will it actually help?
Counseling is often misunderstood within faith communities. Some people avoid it because they believe things that simply are not true. Here are 5 misconceptions about counseling.
Misconception 1: “If I had stronger faith, I wouldn’t need counseling.”
Faith is not the absence of struggle. Many strong believers still battle anxiety, grief, trauma, depression, and deep stress. Counseling does not replace faith. It supports you as you navigate real life with wisdom and help. It teaches you practical tools and how to find answers in God’s word about the struggles you are facing.
Misconception 2: “Counseling is only for people in crisis.”
Counseling can help in crisis, but it is also for growth. Many people begin counseling because they want to improve relationships, build boundaries, or stop repeating the same patterns.
Misconception 3: “Christian counseling is just prayer.”
Prayer matters deeply, but counseling also includes practical tools that help you understand emotions, choices, communication, and patterns. Being a Christian counselor, I will also start and end in prayer. I believe that the Holy Spirit will guide us in our sessions together. However, I’ll also offer real-life skills that support your spiritual journey.
Misconception 4: “Talking about it will make it worse.”
Avoidance often makes things heavier. Avoidance can also give things power where they no longer have any. Naming what you are carrying is a starting point. It removes the power from that place and gives us a place to start. In a safe environment, talking can be part of healing rather than a trigger.
Misconception 5: “If I share my struggles, people will judge me.”
That fear is real. Counseling should be confidential, supportive, and safe. You deserve a space where you can be honest without worrying about how others will respond. There is no judgement here. We have all made mistakes. Sometimes, we need an outside source to listen and help us navigate the road ahead. That is what you will find here. A source that asks the Holy Spirit in and seeks to led you to lean on Jesus as you walk in healing.
If any of these misconceptions have held you back, consider this your permission to take a step. I offer a free initial consultation so you can ask questions, share what you are facing, and decide if this is a good fit.
